Chapter 6

Seth leaned forward and used the mouse to adjust the pitch shift, then strummed the chord again. This time the computer’s display showed it recording correctly.

“There’s a song running through my head. There’s a feeling, running through my heart.”

He kept an eye on the screen as he sang, and was pleased with how everything looked.

He could recall a time when all of his adjustments had to be done with knobs and levers. Some of the old-school artists still recorded that way, but he’d switched over to computer programs early on, because they were cheaper and required less equipment.

Of course, this program was still state-of-the-art. He’d spent his first hundred-thousand dollars on the down payment for this house, his mom’s apartment, and a new truck…but his second went to equipment. Now he could make every song he needed to make—even those requiring backup or other instruments—from this spare bedroom in his house. It was lined with sound-proofing and padding to eliminate reverb and echo, and also contained all of his filming equipment and backdrops, for when he wanted to post videos.

And his masks, of course.

His entire life, he’d wanted to play music, but had no interest in the fame which came with success. Seth knew he was good but didn’t see any need to go on tour or receive adulations or whatnot. The money was nice, yeah, but he didn’t need it.

He was a simple Southern boy, who was happy with his life as a cowboy. He didn’t need all the complications which came with fame.

He strummed.

“It’s the kind of tune without an end, but I don’t know how to start.”

His first videos, he hadn’t even shown his face; the camera had been pointed at his chin and torso. When he’d gone on that reality show, he’d welcomed the chance to wear the mask, and then had freaked out when told to remove it.

He was happy being the masked singer and keeping his secret.

Under his agitated fingers, the strings clanged in discord, and he tossed the pick down with a frustrated sigh.

His secret.

He didn’t see any need to reveal his secret…except to Aria. His Aria. He loved her, and he was keeping a secret from her.

Whether or not she realized it, it was galling to him that, as much as she valued honesty, here he was, basically lying to her.

He was going to have to tell her.

“Hey, man, you in here?”

Blake’s call had him setting aside the guitar. “In the studio,” he hollered back.

His best friend knocked on the door, then pushed it open. His aqua eyes took in the bright lights—Seth invariably was sweating in all of his videos, between them and the mask—and the fancy computer cooling system.

“You remember we have a game tonight?” he prodded.

Seth nodded. “Yeah, I was just fiddling around. No recording. Just trying to get a song right.”

My Aria.

The one he’d written for her.

He might’ve shrugged nonchalantly, but his friend knew him too well. Blake peered at him with narrowed eyes. “What’s wrong?” he asked quietly.
